Our Trustworthy God:  He is All Wise

God is all wise, but sometimes it is hard to trust Him when we cannot see the wisdom or even the goodness to things happening in our lives.  But He is utterly trustworthy and this sermon will point to how and why we should trust Him in all things.

2 Corinthians 12:1-10 It is doubtless not profitable for me to boast. I will come to visions and revelations of the Lord: I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago—whether in the body I do not know, or whether out of the body I do not know, God knows—such a one was caught up to the third heaven. And I know such a man—whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows— how he was caught up into Paradise and heard inexpressible words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter. Of such a one I will boast; yet of myself I will not boast, except in my infirmities. For though I might desire to boast, I will not be a fool; for I will speak the truth. But I refrain, lest anyone should think of me above what he sees me to be or hears from me.

And lest I should be exalted above measure by the abundance of the revelations, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, a messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I be exalted above measure. Concerning this thing I pleaded with the Lord three times that it might depart from me. And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 10 Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ’s sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

1 Peter 1:3-9 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials, that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ, whom having not seen you love. Though now you do not see Him, yet believing, you rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory, receiving the end of your faith—the salvation of your souls.

Job 9:4   God is wise in heart and mighty in strength. Who has hardened himself against Him and prospered?

Job 12:13    “With Him are wisdom and strength, He has counsel and understanding.

1 Timothy 1:17   Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, to God who alone is wise, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.

Romans 16:26   to God, alone wise, be glory through Jesus Christ forever. Amen.

Romans 11:33-36   Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and His ways past finding out! “For who has known the mind of the LORD? Or who has become His counselor?” “Or who has first given to Him And it shall be repaid to him?” For of Him and through Him and to Him are all things, to whom be glory forever. Amen.

Romans 8:28-29   And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren.

Romans 8:31-32   What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?

He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?

Sermon Discussion Question:

  • What does it mean to be wise?

  • Why do all of God's attributes work together to make God so utterly trustworthy?

  • What is God's "goal" and how does that differ from many people's goal in life?

  • What "means" does God use in the lives of

    • 1. Unbelievers;

    • 2. Believers?

  • How should we trust God when we do not see the wisdom in His actions in our lives?

Wisdom is the power to see, and the inclination to choose, the best and highest goal, together with the surest means for attaining it.
— J I Packer, Knowing God, p.80
Wisdom without power would be pathetic, a broken reed; power without wisdom would be merely frightening; but in God boundless wisdom and endless power are united, and this makes Him utterly worthy of our trust.
— J I Packer, Knowing God, p.81
God’s wisdom is not, and never was, pledged to keep a fallen world happy, or to make ungodliness comfortable.
— J I Packer, Knowing God, p.81
