Both God and Man in One Person

Jesus is fully God and fully human in one Person.  This message will focus on His humanity and on the rich blessing that our Savior is "one of us" and yet a sinless and perfect sacrifice and sympathetic High Priest.

Common experiences
But we stress that Christ’s humanity was not just a matter of appearance. The Gospels bring out in detail that the common experiences of other men and women were his too. Like every other person, he hungered (Matthew 4:2; Mark 11:12; Matthew 21:18). But God does not hunger (Psalm 50:12). He was thirsty (John 4:7; 19:28, the second of these references being a fulfilment of Psalm 69:21). He knew what it was to be tired (John 4:6), although God is never weary (Isaiah 40:28). He fell asleep (Matthew 8:24). But God never slumbers nor sleeps (Psalm 121:4). At these points he did what every man and woman does, but what God never does. He obviously had a nature additional to the divine nature which we have seen he possessed. That other nature was a human one.

Sermon Discussion Questions:

  • Why is it important that Jesus was both God and Human?

  • What are the practical implications for us that He was and still is a man?

  • What sacrifices did the Son make by taking on humanity?

  • How does this make Him a sympathetic to our needs and a wonderful High Priest?
