Colossians: Strength in Gentleness

Focusing in on Colossians 3:12 once more this Sunday. "Nice guys finish last."  So the world concludes; don't be one of them...demand, fight, push back to get yours!  Jesus teaches the opposite and launched a kingdom that values meekness, "Strength in Gentleness"

Meekness: Strength in Gentleness

Romans 12:1-2  I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

1.  Lists of other virtues we should pursue:

Colossians 3:12 Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering;

Galatians 5:22-23   But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.

Ephesians 4:1-2   I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called, 2 with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love,

1 Timothy 6:11   But you, O man of God, flee these things and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness.

James 1:21-22   Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. 22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.

Isaiah 66:2  For all those things My hand has made, And all those things exist,” Says the Lord. “But on this one will I look: On him who is poor and of a contrite spirit, And who trembles at My word.

James 3:13-14   Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show by good conduct that his works are done in the meekness of wisdom. 14 But if you have bitter envy and self-seeking in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth.

2.  When we might expect the opposite…and often do the opposite:

1 Peter 3:15-16   But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear; 16 having a good conscience, that when they defame you as evildoers, those who revile your good conduct in Christ may be ashamed.

Galatians 6:1 Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted.

1 Corinthians 4:21   What do you want? Shall I come to you with a rod, or in love and a spirit of gentleness?

2 Timothy 2:24-25   And a servant of the Lord must not quarrel but be gentle to all, able to teach, patient, 25 in humility correcting those who are in opposition, if God perhaps will grant them repentance, so that they may know the truth,

1 Peter 3:4   rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God.

2 Corinthians 10:1   Now I, Paul, myself am pleading with you by the meekness and gentleness of Christ—who in presence am lowly among you, but being absent am bold toward you.

3.  Jesus, our model

Numbers 12:3  Now the man Moses was very meek, more than all people who were on the face of the earth.  (ESV)

Matthew 12:18-20   “Behold! My Servant whom I have chosen, My Beloved in whom My soul is well pleased! I will put My Spirit upon Him, And He will declare justice to the Gentiles. 19 He will not quarrel nor cry out, Nor will anyone hear His voice in the streets. 20 A bruised reed He will not break, And smoking flax He will not quench, Till He sends forth justice to victory;

Matthew 11:29  Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

Matthew 21:5  “Tell the daughter of Zion, ‘Behold, your King is coming to you, Lowly, and sitting on a donkey,
A colt, the foal of a donkey.’ ”

Matthew 5:5  Blessed are the meek,
For they shall inherit the earth.

Romans 13:14  But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts.

Sermon Discussion Questions:

  • How do the values of a culture form individual characters?

  • How would explain what the Bible calls meekness/gentleness to someone?

  • What are some of the ways God wants us to exercise meekness?

  • How did Jesus teach and show meekness?

  • Won't I just be taken advantage of if I do what Jesus commands?
